Is Mario Kart World Worth It? Review

Mario Kart World is an idea for the new console launch, the Switch 2. It is a game that is supposed to show all that the new Switch is bringing to the table. It is a series that fans adore, and everyone can play it regardless of age. The proper continuation of a series is always the top priority of the publisher. That has not changed for the new Mario Kart as it embodies all that made the series such a great experience over the years.

The bar is high for the game, and it has to live up to the expectations. The changes it brings justify its existence as the new Mario Kart game. Sure, there are things that could have been done better, but that’s the issue with nearly all games. Launching a game alongside an improved console is what makes the launch title such a good one, and Mario Kart World does just that. The expectations are high, can it live up to that? Which brings us to the question: Is Mario Kart World worth it? Let’s find out.

What To Expect

At a glance, there are a few changes compared to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Familiar options will greet you once you start the game. The options you get upon lauch are pretty much the same, and more are revealed as you explore the options some more. Even when shuffling through all the information, there won’t be any clear sign of the open world that the developer promised to deliver, which is also part of the game’s title.

There are multiple ways to access the open world, such as using the plus button while on the main menu. It is not given as much importance, even though it plays a major role in bringing together Mario Kart.

Along with free roam mode, players will have access to Gran Prix mode, which has been part of the series for a long time. However, this time around, it is completely different and could have been given any other name. Each of the sections has four tracks, but the major difference is the connection of the tracks. The first track starts from the grid, and you then race on a predetermined number of tracks.

Then you get access to the world of Mario Kart World. Race two starts at the end of race one. A major part of the race is the journey to the next track as you go through the open world of the game. This is a drastic change that can have a positive and negative impact on the players based on their expectations from the game. Once you reach the second track, the journey begins, and you then need to reach the third track.

On and Off the Tracks

Tracks have more details compared to the regular road and look better visually. These tracks are carefully crafted, but that does not take the fun away during the in-between sections. Knowing the best path to take and how to drive on the right track is a key part of success. The introduction of the open world introduces things that were not possible in previous Mario Kart games.

Mario Kart World doesn’t tell you much about the things you can do in it. You have to read the instructions for it, as the game won’t tell you on the go. New abilities like wall riding, rail grinding, and other power-ups will be left unexplained if you don’t read about them.

With time, different tracks will become favorites, some more than others. More tracks will be added through updates. I already have some favorites, but this matter is subjective, so experience will be different for other players. It should be noted that you spend limited time on these tracks in Gran Prix mode.

Gameplay

Gliding makes a return, and you have to race on top of water, not under. There is more to the game than how it initially seems. This is especially true with the open world because it takes you to the world of Mario better than ever, since it’s the first open-world Mario Kart game.

It might be a good Mario Kart open-world game, but it’s not an amazing open-world game in general. Don’t expect a Forza Horizon and GTA type of open world experience. Keep your expectations in check regarding its open world while approaching the game.

Different tasks can be completed while playing with a friend, but it all falls apart when playing solo. When playing solo, objectives don’t cater to players. A good open-world game brings every activity to the map, whether it’s challenges, races, missions, or collectibles.

Mario Kart World lacks a lively open world to approach the way you see fit, with racing events. You are in a world where you don’t have direct contact with the activities, which means that you need to go through different menus to access races, challenges, and events.

Different Race Modes

Knockout Tour is a race that lets you play against other opponents on the course from the open world map. AI can be messy and brutal, especially on the harder difficulty. This mode is really amazing when playing against opponents and even better, real players. More and more players will be discarded with each checkpoint. The mode also utilizes the map of the game since these races take place on the large parts of the game.

If you have rage issues, then be prepared because Knockout Tour is brutal. At any moment, an opponent can overtake you even when you are about to win. With Knockout, it is more prevalent since elimination happens every round. The joy of winning or even losing at a higher position is worth all the sweat and tears. When you are being thrown around, another player is having the time of their life.

Other Racing Modes

There are other modes that are part of Mario Kart World. Balloon Battle lets you eliminate opponents by popping their balloons. The coin runner puts you in a race where you have to get as many coins as you can before the race ends. Time trial is another such mode that will attract a lot of players. There are online ghosts to race against, which helps with learning the technique on a specific race. Time trials are where your skills are put to the test for the better.

Verdict (Is Mario Kart World Worth It?)

Mario Kart World is a fun experience that can keep you engaged for hours. One can even call a must-have game on the Switch 2. However, as a launch title, it does have limited potential. At the end of the day, it is a Mario Kart, so if you don’t like the series, then this one is not going to cut it.

Free roam has the potential, but only time will tell the full story as the game gets more updates. It is the type of game that gets you a limited fun time, and one can’t dedicate all to it. If you are buying a Nintendo Switch 2, then there is a chance that you were expecting a Mario Kart game, and the world can be considered as one of the series’s high points.
