Is Monster Hunter Wilds Worth It? Review

Is Monster Hunter Wilds Worth It? Review

Monster Hunter Wilds is an amazing-looking game that has amazing gameplay and a lot of farming options that feel good rather than just another chore. The game has a lot of different issues when it comes to performance. Monster Hunter Wilds is a wake-up call for the developers and shows them the repercussions of releasing an AAA unfinished game from a beloved franchise.

Steam reviews for the game are not doing much justice either. A lot of live-service games do get fixed over time so this issue can be resolved and then there are games like Anthem, anyway. There are things to like about the game because the core loop is pretty engaging. It has the ability to keep you glued to your seat for hours if you are in the loop. It is a good Monster Hunter game which makes you wonder, is Monster Hunter Wilds worth it? Let’s find out.

Performance and Changes

Graphics has some huge issues which has a huge impact on the way Monster Hunter Wilds looks and plays. Most of these issues exist on PC port but some of them are also on consoles. The environments not only looks good but also feels good to fight against enemies in it. It is fun to explore and find monsters.

This time around new fighting mechanics are introduced, focus targeting and wound system. This new system is pretty interesting at least that was the case for me. You can use focus targeting to attack on wounds to do massive damage. If you have a slow tanky character then focus targeting can pull you in the right direction which will help you land attacks properly. It can be good, especially on mouse and keyboard.

There are now extra moves for different weapons which are fun to use and bring something new to the combat. All the weapons whether it is Switch Axe, Long Sword, Insect Glaive, Gun Lance, and the rest, feel good to use in Monster Hunter Wilds.

There is something new to do with each weapon and one specific weapon hasn’t been given special treatment. Every weapon brings something new to the table which makes them good to use in combat. Of course some weapons would be better than others but that’s usually the case with most games since weapons get buffed and nerfed over time. Each weapon has some good moves that can be used in meaningful way.

We talked about the performence which has been lately the case with games made on RE Engine. Performance especially gets tanked on low end PCs.

The Narrative

The story does not do anything innovative but this time around it is more in the spotlight compared to the previous games. In the previous games, the story did not serve much purpose and was only there for the sake of it. It was short and didn’t take much time to get to the start of the gameplay loop and action. This time around there is more focus on the story, which means that the cut scenes involving characters are longer and there are more dialogues.

It seems like the focus on the story did not work because the developers have not tried hard enough. Sure, there is more focus on the story but that does not mean that the story is good. It’s not that it has a story-driven narrative. The length and quality make you want to skip all dialogues and cut scenes. It’s not like you will be playing Monster Hunter Wilds for the story since there are other games with a lot better narratives.

It is strange to put effort into something that the majority of the players won’t even consider since it mediocre at best. A lot of the dialogues are cheesy and not written that well.

I just hope that they don’t repeat the same thing in the future Monster Hunter games. If you were focusing on the story at least do a better job than this. Introduce more engaging characters and focus on providing a good story rather than just focusing on a story for the sake of it. It’s not like I want them to not focus on it, if anything it’s the opposite but at least do a better job.

Gameplay

The gameplay is the star of the show. The gameplay loop is going to suck you in with the amount of end-game content it offers. A lot of players will be focusing on crafting builds to make their characters better, collecting resources, getting weapons, and stuff like that.

Games like Monster Hunter start once you reach the end of the main story line and that holds true for Monster Hunter Wilds. There is a lot of end-game content to go through. So, even if you are done with the story there will be a lot of stuff to do. The amount of content that Monster Hunter Wilds offers can keep players glued to their seats for hours.

There is a Monster Hunter community that regularly plays these games and they will definitely find something here because the technical issues can be solved over time. The loop of getting better gear to become more powerful is pretty evident and that’s what makes such games so good. Future updates will keep the experience fresh for players. I mean Monster Hunter World lasted for a long time and players loved it.

UI

The UI is one of the game’s low point and developers could have done a better job of making the UI. The UI is not only hard to use but it is clunky and outdated. It’s hard to sort items or engage with the UI. Capcom doesn’t need to work on what they have but rather focus on a full redesign.

You can see all the Monster Hunter things that happened in the past still popping up on the menus. You don’t have to go through multiple different menus just to get to where you need to be in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Verdict

Monster Hunter Wilds is a new entry but that does not change the fact that it builds upon a long-running series. It brings all the good that one would expect from a Monster Hunter game. It also means that it brings the less desirable parts of the previous games, mainly being UI. There is fun to be had in the game, which is especially true if you are a fan of the series.

Despite being better in a lot of different areas, there are still some issues with the game. The story lacks creativity which makes it less engaging.  If they were focusing this much on the story, the least they could do is make it better. The game has performance and technical issues that can break the immersion. Though a lot of these issues have been fixed some persist. On consoles, the game is more stable. Monster Hunter Wilds has that fun gameplay loop that keeps players wanting more.
