Is Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 Worth It? Review

Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 is another entry in the Warhammer 40,000 franchise. There are a lot of different games in the Warhammer universe with some of them being good and some of them being bad. I am not that much into Warhammer stuff and know little about what the universe has to offer. The previous Space Marine was good and so was Necromunda which was the last Warhammer game that I played. So this was my Warhammer experience after quite a bit of time. I would say that the experience I have is amazing so far. This makes you a fan of the universe and I am glad that it does that.

The game is similar to the video games of the good old days you just buy it and it’s simple fun play with no strings attached. From the gameplay standpoint alone the game can be quite a spectacle which has been elevated with the multiplayer aspects. The way it handles horde mechanics is also quite good. The game allows you to use melee and ranged attacks at the same time. There is fun to be had in the game whether you are a fan of Warhammer or not. All this makes you wonder Is Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 worth it? Let’s find out.

The Setting

Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 takes place many years after the events of the first game. Once again Demetrian Titus is back in action. He now has to help fight against a new alien threat. There is a conspiracy going on that pops up pretty early in the game so there is bigger stuff at play.

The story can be hard to follow but don’t have to be a fan of Warhammer to understand what’s happening on the screen. The events of the previous game play some role in the story so knowing about it can be helpful. The game tells you about important stuff that happened in the first game but knowing about the first game can help a lot.

It takes around 10 to 12 hours to finish the campaign. It might not seem a lot but Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 does not overstay its welcome because it is paced well. The game has a big and over-the-top action campaign. Similar to the games from Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 era.

You play as a space marine who is a big, armored brute bred for war. Your character is Demetrian Titus who is a bulky guy that is smashing and gunning through the enemies standing in your way. There is a Gears of War feeling to the game both in the way your character moves and the way combat works. Imagine the heaviness and chunkiness of Gears of War with no cover mechanics. You are basically a walking tank and brute that kills all those standing in the way.

CO-OP and Solo

The campaign is playable in both solo and co-op. You will always have two squad mates with you all the time. They can either be players from co-op or AI. This is another element that gives Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2  Gears of War type feeling because you have allies with you in Gears of War as well. There are checkpoints in the game where you can regroup and hit the button to go to the next area.

Combat

There is a level of depth to the combat. You have armor that deteriorates as you take damage before your health meter. To get back the armor players have to use finishing moves on different enemies. Melee works well with taking down swarms upon swarms of smaller enemies. However, ranged weapons and grenades will be your main source of damage against bigger and tougher enemies.

There is a dodge, roll, and parry. The parry window is not too short so you can pull it off in the heat of combat. Parry works well and makes the enemy more vulnerable. The parry can kill smaller enemies instantly. Your character acts like a Space Marine which is shown in combat. If a smaller enemy jumps at you and you parry, you will grasp it by the throat and slam it down. These integrations add more charm to the gameplay and make you feel unique. Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 goes all in on giving power armor feeling.

Movements are slow but it is not annoyingly slow. Controls are tight and it feels like you are in control. Each melee weapon is different, from a faster big knife to a bulky hammer. Each of these weapon have its own combo. Ranged weapons have a distinct heavy feeling. As you progress further into the game you get access to different weapons with each having a different feel and variation to them. The dual shock integration is good.

Hordes and Upon Hordes

Structure-wise, the game can get predictable. However, with the amount of chaos that the game provides, you can get confused. You are usually in big areas as you watch swarms of enemies descend upon you. If you have played previous games of the developer, World War Z or Aliens: Fire Team Elite then you will have an idea of what to expect from the game.

Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 encourages you to ravage through these hordes of enemies. At times, it can get challenging. The good thing is that the game offers different difficulty modes. Enemies will get mowed down as their gut spills all around. After playing the game for a couple of hours the gameplay loops start to get repetitive. It starts to feel like a rinse and repeat.

The campaign of the game is paced well with the placement of new weapons and change of scenario. One moment you might be fighting on a big battlefield with ships, buildings going down and enemies swarming all around. Then next moment you will be fighting in a narrow hallway. So the game shifts between different encounters to keep the experience fresh.

Most of the time, it is simple killing, but the game mixes things up at times. You might face a boss or sequence where you push uphill, get a jetpack, and stuff like that. The point is that Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 mixes things up to keep it interesting. More enemy types and longer campaigns would have made things better but even at its current stage it is well paced.

General Gameplay

Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 looks quite good and its ability to render hordes of enemies is quite impressive. Later on in the campaign, there is a lot of stuff happening on the screen which can drop framerate.  The faces of characters can be lifeless at times that’s one of the few downsides of the game because the game is good otherwise. The art design and music really come together to provide a good experience.

Multiplayer

Aside from single-player, Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 also offers multiplayer. It is not a forced multiplayer which is good to play and seems like it might have a future. While playing the campaign you can interact with a computer and start one of the two multiplayer modes. The two modes are Operations which is PVE and Eternal War which is PVP.

Eternal War

The mode has three different game modes and each of them is different than the other. There is an emphasis on using the abilities of your class. The time to kill is also decent so you can get killed in 8 rounds or higher depending on enemy armor level and your weapon. Arena mode and more maps will be coming at the beginning of 2025 so you can wait if you are looking for extensive PVP. There are not many balance issues but some characters are stronger than others which is always the case at launch.

Operation

Operations offers six long missions which you can start with friends or quick matchmaking. Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 also has crossplay so you are not bound to one platform. The operation has a connection with the main campaign. So you are actually the second team on the battlefield that has a different task. You will hear about the second team throughout the campaign. So events of the two modes are interconnected.

Operations are not bad and you can spend quite a bit of time gunning and running. More of these missions will added with time and for free which is something that should be appreciated. It’s good and fun with some mindless shooting thrown in the mix. The mode provides a good and fun co-op time.

More Content

The different classes available for each mode add more fun and shake things up. It adds a new spin on the repetitive gameplay experience. You have the option to choose Heavy, Sniper, Bulwark, Vanguard, and Assault. These characters have their own special attacks and the feel of each character is different. That’s when the progression system kicks in. You can rack and level up with lots of customization options. You can change colors, helmets, chest armor, gauntlets, and stuff like that. It really shows the fashion and design of the Space Marines.

There is also weapon mastery that lets you level up your weapons. Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 gives you a lot of multiplayer stuff to keep you busy even when you are done with the campaign. The amount of stuff it offers in just a few multiplayer modes is commendable. It will be better for the game to keep going in this direction. It seems like the foundation for good updates is already laid out. There is no in-game shop or microtransactions at launch.

Verdict (Is Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 Worth It?)

Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 is a good experience that can act as a gateway to the Warhammer for many players. The game will show you glimpses of the lore. All the alien races, the different factions, the Imperium, and all seem quite good. The art design of the surroundings acts as a cherry on top of all that the game has to offer. Robots, aliens, space empires, and old computer screens all come together for an elevated experience. It makes you curious and you would want to experience more of it. At least that’s how it was for me.

All the things that the game offers are top-notch. The campaign is good and it has multiplayer that is good and elevates the overall feeling. There are no microtransactions or pay-to-buy currencies. It has room to bring more content and I will be happy to play it. It has violence in a sci-fi setting, with a skillfully crafted main character and an interesting world. If you were looking for Gears of War like experience or gory and fun gameplay then Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 will feel right at home.
