Is Until Dawn Remake Worth It? Review

Until Dawn Remake is a remake of a major surprise that was released in 2015, it was a game from a less-known studio. The game was applauded for its teen horror theme. The scariness, choice, and consequence mechanics, and the performance of characters among other things, set it apart from other such games. It has been nearly a decade since the release of the original and things have changed during that time.

The developer of the game Supermassive Games has developed many other similar games. These games include Dark Picture Anthology, the Querry, and the most recent one The Casting of Frank Stone. So it is coming back to these other games with improved knowledge. Even though developers have had varying degrees of success with these games none of it provided an experience similar to Until Dawn. It makes you wonder “Is Until Dawn Remake worth it? Let’s find out.

Approach to the Game

Nine years after the release of the original Sony has now brought back the game that started it all with Until Dawn Remake. This time, the game is being developed by the studio called Ballistic Moon. Even though the release of a remake for the game can be questionable since it hasn’t aged that much. If you are into these types of games then this can be a good experience.

One thing is pretty much clear, it is a detailed and faithful recreation of the original. The change in the prologue and some changes in ending set the tone for future games. That’s the only major changes that players will see in Until Dawn Remake in terms of story. Considering all that, there will be concerns about whether the remake was even needed since it is being launched at a full $60 price. It also depends on how you approach the game.

If you are a fan of the original and want to play a better-looking version of the game then this will hit the mark. It is also recommendable for players who have not played the original and want to play it now. It is an easy recommendation if you are one of these two types of players.

Identity

The identity of Until Dawn was built upon teen horror and slasher film-based inspiration. Along with that, the emphasis on player choice was a major part of the game and it hasn’t changed with the remake. The gameplay was driven by light environmental interactions and all of it has been brought back to the remake. The slasher horror setting holds as much importance in Until Dawn Remake as it was in the original. Part of the reason for the intensity is how the game keeps you on edge through jump scares, tense sequences, and intense moments.

The game does a good job of creating tension and letting you experience real scare as well as presenting intense sequences. The mystery regarding the identity of the forces chasing you plays a major part in the game’s narrative. Despite all the positives, there are still some flaws. Since Until Dawn Remake stays faithful to the original, it also brings bad along with goods.

At times, writing can become barely good while other times, it’s straight out bad. Some of the characters are so negative that you will be rooting out for their brutal demise. These are characters who are written that way but they aren’t the only ones that are bad. Discussing the horror stuff is easy but when it comes to teen drama, things fall apart.

Choices and Consequences

Choice and consequence mechanics play a key part and it shows how much the game focuses on the actions of players. It shows how your choices, mistakes, and every action have repercussions. From the quick choices that you are supposed to make to clues that you find in the environment Until Dawn will constantly evolve based on your actions. It is a major strength of Until Dawn Remake that keeps the players going even if at times it lags behind in certain aspects.

Changes In The Game

Despite staying faithful to source material the remake does bring some changes and additions. One of the biggest changes in the game is 3rd person camera. Some scenes of the game have changed to 3rd person which gives players more control in these sequences. When it is combined with the traditional fixed camera, it changes things to a great effect. It modernizes the experience while also making the game more cinematic.

There are also new totems to find in Until Dawn Remake. The environmental addition results in more exploration opportunities. There are more accessibility options this time around to change how prompts appear. The location of totems from the original game has also been changed.

Visually and technically, Until Dawn Remake feels like a good upgrade. The original was made on Decima engine while the remake has been made on Unreal Engine 5 from the ground up. It has resulted in better facial models and animations, more details in the environment, better gore, and better snow among other things.

A lot of scenes have noticeably visual changes which might not sit well with some players. These improvements offer upgrades upon the original while also retaining the essence of the original but that’s what I think and I can only speak for myself. The characters look better, their injuries have more details, and the brutal death scenes in the game have been made more violent.

All of it comes with its own bunch of issues in Until Dawn Remake. There are technical issues and it is hard to ignore these issues. At times frame rate can drop considerably. Even scenes that are not too heavy on the machine. There are some animation glitches but nothing is game-breaking.

Verdict (Is Until Dawn Remake Worth It?)

The main question is whether the price of Until Dawn Remake justifies what it is bringing. For many, the price at the release of the game seems to be high. Many are wondering if this remake was even needed at all. It is not too different than what players faced at the release of The Last of Us Part 1 Remake. That argument is hard to answer since the experience of such changes varies for different players.

One thing is certain, this is a solid remake of not too old game. It might not sit well with some players especially those who have played the original. However, if you are trying it out for the first time then this is as good as it can get. In the end, it depends on how you approach the game and what type of player you are.
