Astro Bot is the newest PlayStation game and it’s good. I am just going to say it from the get-go. It is a fun game, even though it is short and simple. It is an old-school straight straightforward action platformer of Sony’s beloved Mascot. Think of it as a game from PlayStation 1 and the Nintendo 64.

It has its charm and if you were looking for a light-hearted experience this might be the next big thing for you. The game has a lot of hidden surprises even if the story is not the main focus. Discussing these surprises can ruin the game. A lot of the fun comes from seeing and experiencing these wild things.

Astro Bot is an all-out version of Astro’s Playroom, a free game that came along with PlayStation 5. It is a full spin on Astro’s Playroom and is the game that Astro’s Playroom could have been. That game was a fun and brief platformer experience that revolved around the PlayStation consoles and games. This time it is a full game with more levels and things to do. It makes you wonder, is Astro Bot is worth it? Let’s find out.

The Loop

Astro Bot starts with you launching from the base planet. There will be five different galaxies. You can go to each galaxy and select different planets inside it. Each planet is a level and a lot of it isn’t that long. There are multiple levels since there are multiple planets which stacks up and makes the game longer. There are even secret levels in each galaxy.

To unlock more of these galaxies you have to complete levels and collect little Astro Bots. That’s the core loop, you have to collect these small Astro Bots. These Astro Bots wear the costumes of our favorite PlayStation characters. Once you collect enough you can then move ahead and fight the Boss.

The Nostalgia

The core idea behind the Astro Bot remains the same. It is high-quality platforming at play. There is an emphasis on using the DualSense controller. It stretches adaptive trigger and haptic feedback to the maximum capacity. It is a fun and interesting game that can be nostalgic at times. You will be collecting characters that represent different characters from PlayStation games. There are a lot of surprises. It is not just the first-party character but the third party as well.

It is nostalgia on the one hand but the advertising of PlayStation on the other. The story of the game revolves around fixing your mothership which is a big PlayStation 5. The more you play Astro Bot the more PlayStation unearths. It capitalizes on the fun memories that a lot of us have as gamers. Putting all these things aside, there is fun and well-designed platforming. You will pick up abilities for a level but won’t see them again for a while which makes each level unique. There is a lot of verity.

The Levels

There are three hundred of these Astro Bots and you need 200 to unlock the final boss. A lot of them are carefully hidden while others are easy to find. The fun part is finding these bots that are cleverly hidden

but some are easy to find. These Astro Bots can be a callback to your favorite game. Different levels give you different powerups. It can be a jetpack, a spring arm, change into a mouse which changes the level, and stuff like that.

These abilities bring more verity to each of these levels. All of these abilities are fun and do not feel out of place. Astro Bot mixes these different levels and recycles them to make them unique. When you combine these abilities with uniqueness of level, it makes each encounter different than others. There is always something new for you to see.

Astro Bot hits the sweet spot in difficulty and it is forgiving. It will be fun for the youngsters to play this game. It will constantly reward you even when you go into an area where nothing is going on. There are some challenging and shorter levels in the game. It is an easy game so it’s good to see challenges being thrown around from time to time.

The game is a platformer through and through. You will be collecting coins, puzzle pieces, and bots. You can bring all of this stuff back to your hub planet. This is the planet with crash PlayStation 5 that you have to rebuild. That’s where you bring back all your rescued robots. You can move around and see all the classic PlayStation characters. There are a lot of surprises here and there.

As you explore this world you will find different puzzle pieces which gives you more stuff to go through. Like equipping Astro with different costumes. You can also open up the hub area through the use of bots. With enough bots, you can go to these new areas and uncover more secrets. So even the hub area is designed to always give you something. Astro Bot manages to provide fun all the way through.

On a side note, the game looks good. Astro Bot has smooth visuals and great performance. There is some really good music thrown in the mix.

Verdict (Is Astro Bot Worth It?)

There are a lot of positives about this game and not too many negatives. That’s exactly how the game is but if you think that these kinds of games are for kids then you might not like it. If you are not into these types of games then you won’t like it whether the game is good at not. It is a classic experience similar to the game that we used to play while growing up. There were a lot of games like this in the PS1 era and even before that.

It brings back the memories and feelings of a good platformer. Astro Bot is a good and straightforward platformer that can keep you engaged for hours. It can be engaging, creative, thrilling, and nostalgic. It is a fun experience along with being nostalgic. The game can keep you busy for 11 hours or more depending on the amount of side stuff you do.

The game presents something new throughout. Astro Bot might be getting universal praise and a lot of the time it makes people skeptical but this is a good game. If you like platforming games then this will feel right at your alley.
