Is Alan Wake 2 Worth It? Review

Alan Wake 2 is a game that people have been waiting for quite some time. With somewhat certainty I can that it was worth the wait but there is a lot more stuff to discuss before jumping to a conclusion. The single-player experience that it offers can be an absolute blast if you are a fan of Remedy games. It is a survival horror experience that keeps players intrigued for more.

For fans of games such as Control and Quantum Break, this could be the next big step. It does not compromise on all that it stands for and offers a thrilling ride. The game won’t hold your hand which can be scary at times. There are a lot of quirkiness feelings with the game being challenging and beautiful at times.

Just like the first game the game will drop mysteries and upon mysteries on you. Making sense of the things happening around you is a major part of the game. From finding out the mystery of supernatural creatures that spawn all around to making sense of the events happening is all part of the game. Though the first game offered a lot of answers this new entry still retains mysteries. All this makes you wonder Is Alan Wake 2 worth it? Let’s find out

The Background

Alan Wake 2 is a follow-up of Alan Wake with a dash of Control and Remedy fun thrown in the mix to create a cinematic universe. The mystery drops you in the shoes of two characters.  The two characters have twisty campaigns that intercept each other. You can choose who you progress as.

One character is Saga Anderson who is an FBI agent that is trying to solve a mystery. She is the newcomer to this craziness and has no idea what’s happening. Saga is a normal person dealing with the chaos of the world. Her story starts in a town called Bright Falls. She and her partner are investigating mysterious murders from a cult of some sort. Her story crosses with the author Alan Wake who has been missing for a couple of years.

Alan Wake’s sections are twisted eerie noir versions of New York. It is amazing, terrifying, confusing, and visually stunning. On the other hand, Saga’s sections are beautifully crafted atmospheric woods and detailed small towns. At times, it seems like the game takes influence from True Detective with Max Payne scenes thrown in the mix. All of these things combine to create a unique experience.

You don’t necessarily need to play the first game just watch a YouTube video and you are good to go. The game does a great job of getting you on board. There is no physical version so Alan Wake 2 can only be purchased as a digital copy.

The Encounters

Unlike the first game, Alan Wake 2 is more about survival horror and less about flashlight blasting. It feels like the Resident Evil Remake games that have few enemies at once. There is a dodge button and a weak melee, the game is mostly about managing resources making it more like a survival horror. You have to manage flashlight batteries, guns, and ammo, with limited inventory space to manage.

Enemies are designed to mess with you as every single one of them is unpredictable. When you expect that they are going to attack, they will do something else, and vice versa. The game makes sure that you always feel desperate. It can be annoying because enemies might run away which wastes bullets since you have already shot a couple of rounds at them. The flashlight will open a weak spot on an enemy that you can hit. Mechanics are not complex and feedback of shoots is good. It is good survival horror stuff.

Become the Detective in a Survival Horror

The real meat of the game is exploring and figuring stuff out. Saga’s part is full-on detective stuff. You will be talking to people, looking for clues, and moving the mystery forward while also taking down bad guys. With the press of a button, you can move to Saga’s mind.

It is a cozy cabin with maps to read, look at suspects, and connect things. There is even an evidence board with the ability to walk to the board put photos on it and connect the dots. Alan Wake 2 has detective stuff in the world but it’s not too intense since it is primarily not a detective game. The detective stuff explains things for satisfaction and is fun when figuring stuff out.

Alan has his own place to wrap things. His room is that of the writer and he can walk up to the board to rewrite scenes. Yeah, you can change the entire scene and replay them under different circumstances.  There are environmental puzzles thrown in the mix. Alan Wake will figure something out bring it to the board and rewrite a scene. A type of sound along with a flash will occur and you will be in a different environment.

Both characters have their unique aspect which plays a major part in how the events take shape.

The World of Alan Wake

At times, the game can get challenging as it will not hold your hand to figure things out. Some people may struggle with it as it does stuff that is not normally seen in video games. Alan even has a special device that can change the scene right in front of you. Doing so will open up paths that were not there before.

Opening different rooms will lead you to places where you can find upgrades. There are hidden things found in the environment that will grant certain buffs and bonuses. Saga gets collectibles that she can use as points to upgrade weapons and stuff.

In the world, you will see some commercials and other TV stuff. These are live-action commercials that are usually projected on walls or on TV screens. Alan Wake 2 does a great job with immersion, sound, and design with these intricate details. From crazy woods to wet streets, a nightmarish world, shining hallways, and voices calling from a distance all make the environment more detailed.

The colors are amazing which makes the overall experience better. You will always feel like something is going to jump at you. There are some jump scares but the game does not rely on it. Alan Wake 2 uses the environment to make the game more immersive.

Verdict (Is Alan Wake 2 Worth It?)

Alan Wake 2 offers a good continuation of the series by not only including all that made the first game good but also adding a lot more to it. It is interesting and unique enough on its own that people would love to play. The surroundings will help you dive deeper into the game because it is an important part of it. If you are a Remedy fan then the game will make you happy. If you liked the first game then this can be an absolute blast. It is more than 20 hours of fun that will keep you glued to your seat.
