Is Black Myth: Wukong Worth It? Let’s Find The Answer

At first glance, Black Myth: Wukong is the one of best action role-playing games out there. It is the type of game that can suck you in once you start playing it. It can be one of the best games if not the best game of the year. The game is way bigger than many have predicted.

At the time of this writing, it is the second most-played game of all time on Steam. It shows how big and interesting the game is. The game might seem like a souls-like game but it’s not. It is a game with a lot of bosses and each one is different than the other. There are more than 40 bosses in the game that you can find and take down.

Fighting is fun and that’s a major part of the game. It is a combat-driven game that focuses on providing the best combat experience. It is successful in doing so for the most part. In most of the sequences, it is amazing. The way it approaches combat makes sure that players have the best experience possible. All of it brings us to the question, Is Black Myth: Wukong worth it? Let’s find out.

It Begins

Black Myth: Wukong won’t waste your time with fillers. There are major encounters after major encounters without a filler. There are a couple of bits of tinny enemies in between. There are also activities like picking a certain amount of flowers or crafting certain things.

Black Myth: Wukong

Most of the game like 90% of it is all about boss encounters. It is the reason that all of it works so well in Black Myth: Wukong. The game is based on ancient Chinese legend, Journey to the West. It’s about the Monkey King Sun Wukong. It is a guy who flies on the cloud and has a huge stick that he uses for fighting. He is fighting against the gods. Think of it like a God of War in China.

What makes Black Myth: Wukong fun is the slowly unlocking power. You are not actually playing as Sun Wukong but rather someone who looks like Sun Wukong so your character doesn’t have any abilities. As you fight and unlock different stuff you start to unlock cool abilities. You get the ability to create a clone to distract enemies. You can turn yourself into the mist which lets you teleport during combat. There is also the option to freeze enemies for a couple of seconds to do a full combo on them.

What Makes Its Combat Different?

What makes the combat of this game different than others is the lack of block. It is harder than an action RPG like Ghost of Tsushima but easier than souls-like games such as Elden Ring and others. It’s the type of game that lets you brute force through and get it done with a little timing of attack during boss fights. If you are familiar with such games then most of the bosses will go down after 2 to 3 tries. Some will even go down on the first attempt. Black Myth: Wukong does a good job of teaching you.

There is a cool mechanics in the game while fighting. You have the option of doing a light attack which does not do that much damage and is a bash at best. However, as you attack the meter at the left and right side will charge up. Once that meter is charged up, you can then do a heavy attack.

You can use heavy attack whenever you want but it will only do massive damage when the meter is full. This is the attack that is going to do a lot of damage to enemies. It is about charging up with strikes and igniting with one heavy attack to do massive damage.

Level Up

When you defeat enemies you get experience points which can be used to buy items in the store, buy extra potions, and they can become sparks as well. Sparks are basically talent points. There are a lot of different talent trees in Black Myth: Wukong. These talent trees allow you to specialize in different stances. You can have a talent tree that gives more stamina, more health, more offense, more defense, magic, and so on. Putting talent points in one tree can make your character powerful in the related ability.

The thing that Black Myth: Wukong good is the slow emergence of powers. One of the abilities that players have is transformation. As you kill enemies mini-bosses, bosses, and optional bosses you get different forms. You can turn into a frog, a baby-type monster, a monk with spikes in the head, and stuff like that for an attack.

There are also total transformations. When you defeat a main boss you unlock its form. When you turn into that character it will have its own health pool. When you run out of mana you turn back into your normal form.

Changing into a boss form gives you the opportunity to do damage without worrying about taking damage since your base health and boss form health are separate. The boss form transformations are interesting because it’s a mechanics that make you excited. It feels good to be shifting different forms as you go through your health potions.

Verdict (Is Black Myth: Wukong Worth It?)

What makes Black Myth: Wukong different than other games are the bosses. Each one of the boss fights looks and feels like the final boss battle. Every event feels epic and over the top. I got to this conclusion without even realizing it. It is the type of game that a lot of different gamers would like. Whether you are a fan of souls-like games or God of War, Devil May Cary, or any other game like this can be an absolute blast. If you have not played any game from this genre then this is a good introduction to action RPG games.

Black Myth: Wukong is the first AAA title for the developer of Game Science. There is a reminisce of Steller Blade that hits you while playing this game. Steller Blade was also the first AAA game of the studio that was making it. This is the type of thing that the industry needs. It’s not a big-budget game but it is fun, unique, and interesting. The story does not make a lot of sense at least to me.
